Norway Summer Camps
Norway Summer Camp - Alpengirl Camp Locations in Norway
What’s it like in Southern & Fjord Norway?
Norway is awe-inspiring!
It’s where crazy high peaks covered in snow reach all the way to the ocean.
It’s where reindeer roam, the porpoises play, and the walruses bathe in the sun.
It’s where the land is covered in brilliant colors from the icy blue of glaciers, to the lush green of forests.
It’s where you can explore forever and never get tired of the things you see.
It’s where you’ll find leafy mosses, thick spruce forests, the blue anemone, and the aconite.
It’s where you can discover Norway the way it happened after the ice age - by foot and by boat.
It’s where you can see the wonders of the “Home of the Giants” - Jotunheimen National Park.

Norway Summer Weather, Temperatures & Elevation
Southern Norway’s weather is surprising given its proximity to the Arctic Circle. The weather in Norway can be compared to that of the Pacific Northwest of the USA. Summer temperatures can vary between low 70s F, sunny, and dry to upper 50s F and rainy. July and August are Norway’s warmest months.
The coastal weather of Norway can bring strong winds and rain. The weather in the mountains is variable like in most mountains. One day can be warm and sunny with the next being windy and drizzly, it's even possible to see some snowfall. Count on clouds and drizzle for at least half the time in both the mountains and during our paddling days. Sunny days will be a welcome exception. Good rain gear and footwear will enable us to explore the mountains and the fjords no matter what the weather is like.
Kayaking is our lowest elevation activity, happening at sea level. Our backpacking trip brings us to a height of 2068 meters (6784 feet) up Fannaraki Glacier atop Mount Fannaraki. When we’re not sea kayaking or at the peak of our backpack trip, Alpengirls spend most of their time between sea level and 3000 feet.
Currency
Each Scandinavian country has its own currency. Exchanges can be made at banks, airports, train stations and most hotels. Scandinavian currency is not interchangeable between countries as each has a different exchange rate value. Major credit cards are widely accepted throughout Scandinavia. Sweden and Denmark are part of the European Union but have chosen not to use the Euro. Norway is not part of the EU. Travel checks are not used in Scandinavia. The banks will charge a stiff fee if you want travel checks cashed.
Language
English is Scandinavia's second language and is almost spoken fluently throughout. We encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to speak the native tongue. Phrase books and dictionaries are a great help. One of the female trip guides is bilingual and speaks English as well as Norwegian or Swedish and will teach you as much as you’d like to learn.
Alpengirl’s Norway Camp Travel Routes
The adventure travel routes we take during our girls camp trips in Norway start and end in Oslo.
In pursuit of outdoor adventure we’ll be on a contiguous loop route that includes enjoying adventure sports and activities in mountainous wilderness areas near small communities of Lom, Turtagro, Flam, Gudvangen, and Myrdal.
These small local towns are quick stops along the way that provide us with fresh groceries, showers and laundry and sometimes a local festivity.
Featured Southern & Fjord Norway Towns Along Our Camp Travel Routes
Alpengirl camp is a trip and travel teen adventure camp for girls where most of our time is spent camping in tents outdoors and in pursuit of outdoor adventure in various wild places along a pre-determined adventure travel route in a diverse local area.
The towns featured here are commonly passed through on our way to adventure and the information that follows may serve as a travel planning resource for camp parents who may be seeking to plan a similar adventure for the rest of the family while their Alpengirl is at camp with us this summer.
Oslo, Norway is Norway’s capital city as well as it’s largest. Alpengirls spend their whole first day exploring Oslo going to the Viking Ship Museum, seeing enormous sculptures by Vigeland, and visiting the Royal Palace. Culture and history are abundant here and one could easily spend an entire two weeks here!
Lom, Norway is the gateway to the Jotunheimen mountains where Alpengirl goes backpacking. The name “Lom” translates to meadow, describing the town’s beautiful setting. With around 3000 residents, Lom has a rich history and is home to one of the few remaining stave churches.
Turtagro, Norway is known as the place of birth for Norway mountain sports – climbing, mountaineering and backcountry skiing. A hotel and library here serve as a common rest place for explorers and mountaineers of Norway. It is here that Alpengirls will have hot showers after our backpacking trip.
Flam, Norway is located at the very end of the famous Sognefjord, the longest and deepest fjord in Europe. Flam is a popular travel destination with fantastic scenery filled with mountains meeting ocean. It’s from here that the famous Flam Railway arrives and departs. The railway is one of the world’s steepest railways on normal gauge, spiraling in and out of mountain tunnels, and offering spectacular views.
Gudvangen, Norway is nestled at the end of Naeroy Fjord in a spectacularly narrow, green and lush canyon. Take a tour of the White Caves or take a ferry to Flam for a trip on the Flam Railway. It is in this small community that Alpengirl ends their kayaking trip.
Myrdal, Norway serves as railway station to get to and from Flam. Here we switch trains to head back to Oslo towards the end of our trip. The magnificent Kjosfossen Waterfall is near Myrdal and is a stop for the Flam Railway. There are many hiking and biking trails around this area and a hotel for anyone choosing to stay the night.
