Alpengirl’s Washington Camp Travel Routes
Alpengirl has been operating overnight adventure camp trips for girls in Western Washington for almost as long as Alpengirl has been in existence. Washington is second to Montana in number of Alpengirl camp sessions operated every summer. Pre-teen and teen girls living in the Pacific Northwest (Washington state in particular) represent a fair amount of campers that attend Alpengirl camps in MT, WA, AK HI and Norway every summer.
The adventure travel routes we take during our girls camp trips in Western WA start and end in Seattle.
In pursuit of outdoor adventure we’ll be on a contiguous loop route that includes enjoying adventure sports and activities in mountainous wilderness areas near cities like Seattle, Port Townsend, Port Angeles, Forks, Bellingham, Winthrop and Leavenworth.
These places are quick stops along the way that provide us with fresh groceries, showers and laundry and sometimes a festival, parade or event.
Featured NW Washington Towns Along Our Camp Travel Routes
Alpengirl camp is a trip and travel teen adventure camp for girls where most of our time is spent camping in tents outdoors and in pursuit of outdoor adventure in various wild places along a pre-determined adventure travel route in a diverse local area.
The towns featured here are commonly passed through on our way to adventure and the information that follows may serve as a travel planning resource for camp parents who may be seeking to plan a similar adventure for the rest of the family while their Alpengirl camper is at camp with us this summer.
Leavenworth, WA, population 2,074, is Washington’s Bavarian Village located at the foot of the Cascade Mountain Range, a starting point for outdoor adventure with whitewater rafting and swimming in Lake Chelan nearby.
Winthrop, WA and the Methow Valley is Washington’s equivalent of the Old West – cowboy country! Winthrop (population 1,900) is at the eastern entrance to North Cascades National Park with great rock climbing nearby.
Bellingham, WA is a university town with excellent sea kayaking nearby. Mount Baker is the largest volcano in the local area, and its glaciers are visible from many parts of the city.
Port Townsend, WA is a small ferry port town known for it’s Victorian buildings and maritime history. Alpengirls will enjoy sea kayaking and blueberry picking here.
Port Angeles, WA is where the headquarters for Olympic National Park is located. Sea kayaking on the Straits of Juan de Fuca and swimming in Lake Crescent are Alpengirl favorite activities close to Port Angeles. Port Angeles also serves as a jumping off point for an Alpengirl day trip to visit Victoria BC Canada by ferry. Port Angeles is situated in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains, which means the city gets significantly less rain than other areas of western Washington, including Seattle.
Forks, WA, population 3,120, is home of Twilight the movie! Alpengirls will take pictures, play vampire baseball and enjoy a quick break in this tiny misty town that is lately all about Twilight!
Victoria BC Canada is known as the “City of Gardens” and is only 25 sea miles from Port Angeles, WA. It’s one of the oldest and sunniest cities in the Pacific NW. If you get here, be sure to check out The Empress Hotel, The Royal British Columbia Museum/IMAX National Geographic Theater, Chinatown and The Butchart Gardens.
