North Cascades AlpengirlsFrom the North Cascades Alpenguides (Sophie & Sofia): We started our trip with lots of name games and more! After arriving at our beautiful campsite on the Sauk river we explored while putting our new name skills to the test. We learned about setting up our tents, skill beads and meals at camp. Everyone was excited to declare new skills like navigation, shelter building, and cooking, while some girls like Bea and Eli were excited to add beads to their necklace from previous years. Our dinner was the camp welcome burritos (a crowd favorite) with some M&Ms paired with get to know you questions. Rylee was chosen as our first leader of the day (LOD) for our big rafting adventure, she also helped the girls choose our camp menu for the second half of camp. After our filling breakfast of strawberry stuffed french toast, we had our first Alpenolympic where Lilla took home the win. After an intro to rafting talk from our raft guides, we hit the water for some fun on class 3 and 4 whitewater. Everyone was a star paddler and Olivia was extra excited to paddle fast and even got in the river for a chill dip. Back at camp, Eliana and Lilla helped prepare our dinner of beef teriyaki stir fry with goat cheese and almond stuffed apricots as an appetizer! We had a surprise desert of brownie crumbles in our care package for Brooke that was shared with the entire group. Ellie showed great leadership and initiative around camp by taking charge with our group dishes and helping others out along the way! We had a great talk to prepare for our backpacking experience by sharing what we appreciate about the wilderness. Ash also helped start our conversation about community norms where we talked about lifting each other up, maintaining positive attitudes, and trying new experiences and challenges. Bea was chosen as our second LOD and will help kick off our backpacking expedition. Everyone is looking forward to reconnecting with nature more in the North Cascades, continuing to build our friendships and learning new skills from the Alpenguides, and of course getting to swim at most of our campsites! We can’t wait for the all the laughs and jokes we will emerge with after our backcountry experience! The next blog and photo will be posted after backpacking ends on July 12 or 13:)
