From the Alpenguides (Rose & Ellie):
We started the trip at the headwaters of the Missouri River at Missouri headwaters State Park. We enjoyed the Welcome Burrito dinner with chips and salsa followed by the M&M getting to know you game before bedtime. Our first night was calm with a beautiful sunset and a slight chill in the air which made for good 1st nights sleep.
The first morning of camp we introduced yoga to the girls and covered the basics of camping, Leave No Trace, and life outdoors. Ruby was selected by the Alpenguides to be the first Leader of the Day (LOD) and did a great job and led the group in selecting some of the upcoming meals on the canoe trip. Before leaving for the Gates of the Mountain boat tour the group walked to see the headwaters of the Missouri River. The boat tour took place in the afternoon and the girls heard about the fishing places there, the undiscovered underwater caves, the cliff swallows and saw what looked like faces in the rock formations on the canyon walls:) They enjoyed some views and learning the history of this area of the Missouri and also took turns looking through binoculars for eagles. The evening camping at Holter Lake provided another great sunset photo opportunity (photo insert). Melanie made us a delicious appetizer of apricots stuffed with goat cheese and almonds, which was followed by a dinner of Teriyaki Stir Fry, prepared by Ruby and Rosalind.
Today the LOD is Amari who occupied the group by playing Scattergories. The group had yoga and Lilliana led a “Hollywood Pose” at yoga with Melanie. After a slog of a drive through much construction (good thing for the huge music play list the group created!), the group has finally arrived at the canoe boat launch tonight outside of Fort Benton, MT on the banks of the Missouri and will meet their river guide named Heather at the launch in the morning and hit the waters! Tonight, we plan to hold our first Alpenolympic Event “The Best Nest!”
Emery, Eleanor and Lilliana have been really helpful campers in organizing their own gear and helping us (Rose and Ellie) shuffle gear and pack the car, after helping other campers organize their gear. These girls are total team players.
Today, there are going to be thunderstorms until about midnight. The weather for the rest of the week is looking decent, but you never know in Montana!
Yesterday, the girls picked their camp skill beads. Camp Group Living and Cooking were the most popular choices and overall now that we have fresh food, ice in the coolers, dinner in the works and no more driving until after the river, we are excited to get on the river for a fun time in the backcountry:)
We will blog again when we get to the hot springs on 7/15, the girls have expressed excitement for that as well!
