From Olympic Sea to Summit Alpenguides (Sophie & Sofia): We’ve now completed our sea adventure and feel much stronger and comfortable as a group, we are excited to switch gears and start our summit adventure soon!
Our wonderful kayaking guides Sophia and Amber taught us everything we needed to know to prepare for sea kayaking from ocean terrien, gear assessment, paddling techniques, risk management to marine life facts! Feeling energized, we set off for our first paddle, which was a bit challenging to cross open water, but our LOD Katie helped keep everyone together and singing along the way. Once we arrived at our campsite at Pelican Beach on Cypress Island, we were rewarded with a full lunch and time to relax and swim. Tosca loved napping on the rocks, while Brooklyn led a charge of girls into the chilly water. In the evening, we did a sunset hike, which allowed us to see beautiful colors over the San Juan’s and even Canada. The girls played a summit game of Ninja and Mafia while enjoying a sweet treat. That night, Maddy won our eco spray alpenolympic and many girls slept under the starts for there shelter bead or just for fun!
After beach yoga, we set out on our day paddle. Anabelle had many leadership opportunities as our LOD and decided to seize the day! After strong head winds we stopped at a beach for a lunch break, where Maddy, Eliza, Anabelle and Nora laughed and played in the quicksand mud. In the afternoon, we squeezed in a short day hike before our filling ramen 'n more dinner that Emily helped prepare. During our sunset paddle, we saw many sea otters and seals popping up in the distance!
Next morning we said goodbye to the island and paddled back to the “mainland” Nora led our final paddle as LOD and her energy and efficiently got us to the ferry on time! Emily counted many harbor porposes pop up right next to our boats, which was an incredible sight.
After showers and clean laundry, we had a night of laughs with an Alpenolympic fashion show, where Eliza took first place for her hilarious persona. Next day was a crowd favorite activity of rock climbing. Kairine was especially excited to climb and teach the other girls the ropes. Everyone climbed at least 2 routes and pushed themselves out of there comfort zone while supporting each other! Making our way to the next ferry, Eliza kept the group positive with her excellent LOD DJ skills, and the girls loved getting out to the bow of the ferry. We're now preparing for our backpacking trips - one in the mountains and one on the coast - both in Olympic National Park.
